ServiceNow and OpenAI expanded their partnership on October 28, 2026. For IT teams using ServiceNow, OpenAI says its marketplace now carries a ChatGPT plugin, while security, voice and coding integrations remain planned.
The announced integration is intended to help staff find related incidents and update records from ChatGPT. Customers choose the exposed capabilities, with existing permissions and business rules applying; richer interactive experiences remain previews.
The plugin uses Model Context Protocol, or MCP. As ServiceNow’s explanation makes clear, MCP is a standard way for AI to use business tools. A connection does not itself grant access to every company record.
What is scheduled next
By the end of 2026: enhanced plugin capabilities.
January 2027: security early access, followed by planned general availability in the second quarter of 2027.
First quarter of 2027: voice-assisted assessments of proposed AI uses in ServiceNow’s Control Tower.
2027, with no quarter specified: Codex in AI Workflow Factory, for application development.
These are vendor targets, not delivery guarantees.
What buyers need to establish
Installing a plugin and having permission to use its connected app are separate matters under OpenAI’s administration guidance. Available controls depend on the app and workspace. For an employee, the next step is to ask the administrator about one concrete task, not assume a marketplace listing enables it.
There is also a workflow-design constraint. ServiceNow’s employee-authored MCP Server Console FAQ says subflows and actions exposed as tools must run synchronously: they cannot contain approval steps, waits or other asynchronous logic.
That restriction concerns those tool types, not every integration or every approval process. The practical implication is to establish how a task that needs a manager’s decision will pause and resume, rather than assume an existing process can move unchanged into chat.
Costs remain a separate question. The announcement does not specify plugin pricing. OpenAI’s Marketplace terms say purchase eligibility depends on the customer’s agreement and the specific partner product; being listed does not make every product from that partner eligible.
Before budgeting a rollout, ask for the supported actions, required ServiceNow products, eligible ChatGPT plans, regional availability and usage charges. A sensible initial scope is one confirmed task with a named user and defined permissions; features needed from the 2027 roadmap should remain dependencies, not assumed capabilities.
