GPT-6 Brings Intelligent UI to ChatGPT: Rollout and API Guidance

GPT-6 adds interactive answers to ChatGPT. See the rollout dates, Pro reasoning exception and why API model selection remains a separate decision.

OpenAI announced GPT-6 with Intelligent UI for ChatGPT on October 7, 2026, beginning a staged rollout of interactive answers in the Chat tab. For users and workplace admins, the immediate change is how ChatGPT presents information and lets people explore it. API teams face a separate model-selection decision.

What an interactive answer can do

OpenAI says Intelligent UI can combine text, graphics, buttons, forms and charts inside a ChatGPT conversation. Its announced examples include a bill splitter and calculators whose inputs users can change. The model chooses a format for the question; it can still return plain text.

OpenAI describes a library of native components and a compiler that renders them progressively as the model generates the response. This makes the interface part of the answer, rather than just an illustration alongside it.

The company also reports that GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. That is a vendor-reported improvement in answer-start time, not evidence that a complete, verified task finishes 44% faster.

Rollout dates and the Pro reasoning exception

The October 7 release notes give this schedule for the Chat tab:

Plus, Pro and Business

GPT-6 Sol

Enterprise

GPT-6 Sol

October 7, subject to workspace admin settings

Free and Go

GPT-6 Luna

October 8, 2026 — scheduled

These are rollout start dates, not confirmation of access for every account. The entry does not specify an Edu schedule.

Intelligent UI supports Instant through Extra High reasoning. The Pro reasoning option uses GPT-6 Astra and does not support Intelligent UI. A Pro subscription and the Pro reasoning option are different things: support teams should check both the account plan and the selected reasoning setting before diagnosing missing interactive answers.

The same release notes say Work and Codex models are unchanged by this release. Readers considering a separate software upgrade can use our Codex CLI 0.161.0 guide; the Chat rollout is not itself a reason to update a coding installation.

For a Chat pilot, a useful next step is one comparison or calculation task with known inputs. Check the displayed result, change an input and check it again. Record the plan, reasoning setting and product used. Measure the first useful response separately from completion of a correct answer; a responsive interface alone does not establish correctness.

Keep API model selection separate

The October 7 API changelog records an update to chat-latest. OpenAI positions that alias as a way to try recent chat improvements and recommends the GPT-6 family for production API use. Its underlying snapshot changes regularly; this announcement does not require a production migration.

There is also a product boundary. The chat-latest model page documents text output, function calling and structured outputs, not an Intelligent UI rendering contract. Our reading: changing an API model ID is not a documented way to obtain ChatGPT’s native interactive interface.

For teams already evaluating a model change, OpenAI’s current guidance positions gpt-6-astra for demanding work, gpt-6.1-sol for a balance of capability and cost, and gpt-6-luna for focused, high-volume tasks. Check compatibility before substituting IDs: GPT-6.1 Sol requires the Responses API for tool calling; its Chat Completions support excludes tools.
