OpenAI announced the Rosalind Academic Plan on October 15, 2026, offering eligible U.S. university labs up to 30 ChatGPT Business Standard seats at no cost for up to 12 months. The program provides a sponsored route to its specialist life-sciences model.
Applications are open. GPT-Rosalind access requires approval under OpenAI’s trusted-access process.
OpenAI describes GPT-Rosalind as a model for reviewing scientific literature, reasoning about biological data and planning experiments. The sponsorship expands access; it does not establish improved scientific results.
Which application route applies?
A principal investigator (PI) or designated lab lead applies for the lab. OpenAI distinguishes two routes:
University’s position | Where to start |
|---|---|
No OpenAI Enterprise agreement | Academic-lab application, submitted by the PI or lab lead. |
Existing OpenAI Enterprise agreement | University administrator or OpenAI account team, through the institutional access process. |
The announcement does not promise identical sponsorship terms for institutions using an existing Enterprise agreement.
Before applying, check that your university permits a separate Business workspace. The application guide calls for an institutional .edu account, lab and intended-use details, and a trained, institution-designated biosafety contact. Identity verification alone is not approval. After setup, the lead must enable members’ model access.
The limits that matter to a lab
Membership. Members need verified institutional addresses with the same email domain as the approved lead. Collaborators using another institution’s domain cannot join.
Usage. The free seats remain subject to plan usage limits. The reviewed program guidance does not specify a numerical Rosalind allowance.
Billing. Setup requires a payment card. Check covered seats, the end date and any charges before accepting. The accepted offer determines what happens afterward.
Research data. OpenAI says this plan’s research data is not used for training by default. Standard retention still applies; the offer does not provide Zero Data Retention.
Software integrations. The plan includes neither API access nor API credits. Connecting GPT-Rosalind to a lab’s own research software requires separately approved API access, outside this seat offer.
Practical implication: affiliation can matter more than headcount. A small cross-university team may not fit the membership rule despite being below the 30-seat ceiling. Check who can join before judging the offer by its seat count.
For background on the separate institutional route, see RohitAI’s earlier coverage of Rosalind’s API access and permitted uses.
Methodology: Based on OpenAI’s announcement and official documentation checked on October 15, 2026, with AI-assisted research and drafting. No hands-on model testing was performed.
