GitHub announced on November 4, 2026 that developers building Apple apps can use Copilot, its AI coding assistant, inside Xcode’s built-in assistant. The public preview adds a new way to use Copilot within Apple’s app-development software.
The new option starts with Xcode 27.3 beta and requires macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. GitHub says all Copilot plans are supported, including Free. The separate Copilot extension remains available, so existing users do not have to switch.
Who can use the preview
GitHub directs developers to download the beta from Apple Developer Downloads, then open Xcode > Settings > Intelligence to set up Copilot. This is a beta-only entry point at launch, not an addition to the current stable Xcode release.
On a work Mac, software compatibility is only part of the check. Apple’s setup guide says administrators can disable the coding assistant on managed devices. An eligible Copilot account therefore does not guarantee that the preview can be enabled on an employer-managed Mac.
Plan eligibility is also different from usage allowance. GitHub’s current pricing page lists limited chat and agent use on Free, while Pro costs US$10 per user per month and includes an AI-credit allowance. Code-completion allowances are separate: unlimited completions on a paid plan do not mean unlimited assistant conversations.
What changes for extension users
The existing Copilot extension already offers suggestions as you type, chat, code review and agent actions such as editing files. The new development is access through Apple’s own assistant interface, not Copilot’s first availability in Xcode.
GitHub’s native-preview announcement does not establish that it matches every extension feature. In particular, developers who rely on as-you-type suggestions should not assume that switching to the built-in assistant replaces that workflow.
The practical choice is to evaluate the native route if your team already uses the required beta and permits external coding assistants. If your work depends on the current stable toolchain or particular extension features, keeping the extension avoids making a beta upgrade solely for a different assistant interface. Check the capabilities you rely on before replacing an established setup.
