When Firefox’s AI window is useful for comparing webpages

Decide when Firefox Smart Window fits a webpage comparison, what context leaves your device, and how to control memories and feedback.

Firefox’s optional Smart Window offers help comparing webpages for people researching purchases, travel or everyday questions. Mozilla’s September 16, 2026 announcement added Mistral Small 4 as a model option and expanded the beta to France. This is a guide to deciding whether the feature fits your task, not a new launch report.

Our recommendation: consider it for public material when you can check the answer against the original pages. Use ordinary browsing when choosing and checking the material would take more effort than simply reading it. The important tradeoff is convenience versus the context you are prepared to share.

Check access before planning around it

As checked on October 12, Mozilla’s getting-started documentation describes a gradual desktop beta: Firefox 150 onward in the US and Canada, and 155 onward in France. A Mozilla account is required; eligibility does not guarantee access. The terms require users to be at least 18.

The usage guidance describes daily chat limits resetting at midnight Eastern Time; browsing remains available afterward. It gives no numerical allowance. The reviewed sources do not establish a Smart Window subscription price, so do not assume unlimited free chat or worldwide availability.

Choose the task before adding tabs

Mozilla describes comparisons, summaries and sourced web answers. The following choices are editorial recommendations based on those capabilities, not findings from a hands-on test.

Your situation

A reasonable choice

What still needs your judgment

Several public pages with comparable information

Try a narrowly scoped comparison.

Check that every option is assessed against the same criteria.

One short page or an obvious choice

Read it directly.

AI is useful only if its answer helps enough to justify checking it.

A page contains confidential work or personal details

Keep the task in an approved workflow; share only permitted material.

A useful answer does not establish permission to send the underlying information.

You want to complete a purchase or booking

Use the website yourself.

Comparison assistance is not transaction execution.

Mozilla’s current help page says the assistant can group or close tabs, but cannot click website buttons, fill forms, buy products or book travel.

The sidebar automatically includes the current page as context. You can add recent tabs with @ or the + button. Check the page before sending; do not assume each inclusion requires a separate confirmation.

For example, when comparing two public product pages, specify the same fields for both. An illustrative prompt—not a tested result—is:

Compare these two pages on listed price, warranty length and return conditions. Link each finding to its source. Mark anything the pages do not establish as missing, and distinguish a stated fact from your recommendation.

Check the decisive details on the original sites, including whether they apply to the same product variant and purchase conditions. If a missing fact could change your choice, investigate it rather than accepting a confident summary. Mozilla’s terms caution against relying solely on generated answers.

Local storage does not mean offline processing

For Mozilla-provided models, your question, relevant memories and relevant browsing context go to Mozilla’s servers, then to the model provider. The provider sees Mozilla’s IP address. The privacy notice also describes search-partner processing when needed.

Mozilla says its offered model providers do not retain conversations after processing. That is a published handling commitment, not an independent audit. It does not mean the material never leaves your device.

Our interpretation: decide which information may be sent before choosing a model. Hiding an IP address does not remove a name or confidential detail written inside a prompt. For work material, check that the recipients and the information are permitted under your organization’s rules.

Memories involve three separate choices

Mozilla’s memory documentation says memories are optional and can draw on chats and browsing in Classic or Smart Windows, excluding Private Windows. Mozilla processes the inputs on servers, then stores the resulting memories locally.

For a one-off comparison, our recommendation is to state your criteria explicitly and leave unrelated personalization out. The controls do different jobs:

  • Stop using memories in this chat: turn off the chat’s memory toggle. This does not necessarily stop new memories being learned from the conversation.

  • Stop creating memories: disable learning from both chat and browsing activity in Smart Window settings. Existing memories remain.

  • Remove saved memories: delete them through Manage memories. Deleting chats or browsing history does not delete memories.

These distinctions come from Mozilla’s memory controls. If you want both learning and personalization stopped, check both settings and existing saved memories; a single chat toggle is not enough.

Review feedback before submitting it

Sending a rating is a separate sharing decision. Mozilla’s feedback guide says a submission includes the conversation through the rated answer and can include referenced page content and interaction details. You can inspect the submission and uncheck sharing of referenced pages.

Mozilla says an authorized team can review that feedback, and submissions are deleted after one year. This is separate from ordinary chat processing. Before submitting, check the conversation itself as well as any attached page content.

Make the comparison earn its place

Try Smart Window when the material is appropriate to share and the answer can help organize a real choice. Keep the original pages as your authority, and make the purchase or other final decision yourself. No measured time saving or comparison-accuracy result is established here.

For the broader model-host and custom-endpoint choices, see RohitAI’s existing Firefox Smart Window guide. Changing the assistant model is a separate decision from choosing what information to provide.

Methodology: AI-assisted reporting and analysis using the persisted research dossier and official Mozilla sources rechecked on October 12, 2026. Recommendations and the example prompt are proposed uses, not completed tests. No hands-on browser testing or independent privacy audit was performed.
